The only known previous history of this distinguished establishment was "The Kendrick Book" written in 1948 by Miss Appleby. Daphne was a pupil at Kendrick from 1955 to 1962 after leaving she went on to Rolle College in Exmouth, to train for her career in teaching. She wrote a social history of Rolle College, Exmouth entitled "Exmouth's ROLLE", which was published by Corridor Press, in May 2015. Kendrick School was first housed in Watlington House, Watlington Street, Reading in 1877 and moved to its present site in London Road in 1927. The book covers the school's history over that 140 years. It also contains a section on Kendrick Boys' School, which started a term after Kendrick Girls', until its merger with Reading School in 1916. Daphne has made contact with as many former Kendrick girls and members of staff as possible, from all generations, to obtain their memories and copies of any photographs they had from their time at the school. Daphne trained for teaching at Rolle College, Exmouth in the mid 1960s then maintained links with the town and also with those she had met while studying there for almost half-a-century before she and Jim chose to retire to the town in 2009. However, it was not until she started to amass photographs and memories from former students and staff of Rolle College that she realised the existence of it predecessors. Southlands School magazines and newspaper articles were then consulted, along with census returns, street directories and websites such as FreeBMD to provide as wide a picture as possible of the use of the site from 1870.
